With all of the changes the pandemic has brought, many children have not been physically attending school for months. But it’s important to remember that soon summer will officially begin! That means warmer (and most likely longer days) that you can fill with some easy, fun activities that can improve your child’s speech and language skills.
Bubbles
Bubbles are a hit with kids of all ages! When your child blows bubbles, he or she is actually strengthening the muscles in the mouth. Taking turns blowing bubbles with younger children can improve their imitation of mouth movements, which can lead to them imitating more sounds and words! Work on /b/ and /p/ sounds as you encourage your child to say words like “blow,” “bubble,” “big,” “pop,” and “please”!
Sidewalk Chalk
Get creative as you and your child draw side by side with chalk. Describing what you are drawing aloud will encourage your child to do the same! Using words like big, small, round, and bright can enhance your child’s vocabulary in a fun, hands-on way. Ask your child to hand you the color chalk you name to work on their ability to identify colors.
Water Activities
The rising temperature is no reason to stay indoors! Take out the sprinkler toys, water table, kiddie pools, or make a sensory bin (see my previous post about how to use sensory bins). Teach your child about location words as they (or toys) go in, out, on, and under the water!
Cold Treats
Make your own yummy summertime treats! Use simple recipes like these to improve your child’s ability to follow directions and sequence steps.
Fruit Popsicles:
1. In a blender, mix your favorite frozen fruit with yogurt, coconut milk, or juice.
2. Pour into popsicle molds.
3. Freeze.
4. Enjoy!
