Memories of rolling dough, cutting cute little gingerbread men, and decorating with piped icing and gumdrops can put anyone in the holiday mood. And guess what? November 21st is National Gingerbread Cookie Day! Here are some fun ways to celebrate with kids!

Read About Gingerbread Cookie Characters

A gingerbread cookie themed story is the perfect way to start some Christmas cheer at home. Two of our past Story Box subscription boxes included the absolute cutest books featuring gingerbread man as the main characters. The books are still available on the Story Box website for individual purpose too!

Kick! Jump! Chop! The Adventures of the Ninjagingerbread Man is a story about the coolest cookie around. It’s great for working on language concepts like “who” questions and “verbs” with children too!

Catch that Cookie  takes kids on a guessing game as they follow clues left by a sneaky gingerbread man around a school. This book exposes kids to rhyming and encourages them to use inferencing and predicting skills to find the sweet treat!

Bake Your Own

What better way to celebrate National Gingerbread Cookie day than to bake some of your own at home? To work on your child’s speech and language skills during this fun activity, try these tips:
1. Read the list of ingredients to your child. See how many he or she can remember and get while at the store or in the kitchen at home.
2. Tell your child 2-3 steps in the recipe. Encourage him or her to try remembering them and following the directions in the right order.
3. With younger children, work on body part identification. Ask him or her to decorate their cookie with eyes, a mouth, ears, etc.!
4. Ask your child to use action words to describe what he or she is doing while baking or decorating.

Craft a Cookie

Creating gingerbread cookie craft can be just as fun as the real thing (and a little less messy!). Cut out a blank cookie canvas from a piece of brown construction paper, and have your child draw and decorate a face, buttons, and any other accessories they come up with! Model how to use descriptive words like colorful, big, small, round, etc. and your child might make sentences using the same types of vocabulary words.

Whether you celebrating by reading, crafting, drawing, or eating, enjoy National Gingerbread Cookie Day!
